Friends,
It's been a busy fall! We have lots of positive news to share:
1) Water Quality Monitoring and Restoration Program for the Little Sauble River
At our Open House at the Bourgeois farm this summer, we announced several pilot projects, including a protection initiative for the Little Sauble River. The Little Sauble is an officially registered Fish Sanctuary and also has a direct impact on the water quality in Inverhuron Bay. Thanks to community feedback we were able to further shape this initiative according to local needs and priorities.
There will be ample opportunity to get involved. As an important part of the program PWEP will be working with qualified experts to offer free workshops and training opportunities in the spring/summer of 2026. We envision this as a citizen science program at its core, where the Inverhuron community is empowered to protect the environment we all know and love. We are currently finalizing the details of the program and will be posting our Project Outline on the PWEP website soon, so stay tuned!
2) Land Trusts
We are also working hard to bring more Land Trusts into the area, in order to help protect Inverhuron's unique natural heritage in the face of increasing development pressure. We are aiming for a diversity of conservation models, including Indigenous-led Land Trusts. More on this soon!
3) OFT Community Garden
Speaking of Land Trusts: the Ontario Farmland Trust – PWEP's landlord over at the Bourgeois Farm – is setting up a community garden. A portion of the food grown at the garden will be donated to local food banks/food support organizations within the Tiverton/Kincardine area. If you're interested in learning more or reserving a plot for next spring/summer, please reach out to Ben at ben@ontariofarmlandtrust.ca. Not only will you be able to grow your own fresh veggies of choice – it's also a great opportunity to visit the farm, meet up with neighbors, PWEP members and OFT folk, learn and collaborate. We look forward to seeing you there!
As for our other ongoing projects, we're making steady progress:
1) Tidman development: PWEP's judicial review is ongoing, and we are waiting for the final hearing to be scheduled. It will likely take place in the spring. We will need additional funds to get us through the hearing. Our opponents are required to reimburse us up to 75% of the costs of the previous hearing, which is great, but we still need at least an additional $4'000 to be able to pay the lawyer's fees. So to help us hit the ground running please donate here. Charitable tax receipts provided. Or, if you prefer e-transfer, please use our email.
Your generous support is greatly appreciated!
2) Land Use: PWEP has presented the planning authorities with our alternative land use proposal, with the goal of preventing sprawl. The County Official Plan Review is entering its final phase, and thanks to PWEP's comments planners are considering reverting historic Inverhuron to a Hamlet designation. We continue to oppose the Secondary Urban designation for the lakeshore, and are watching the review process closely.
As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
Wishing you all a lovely rest of the fall,
The Team @ PWEP
