Friends,
Spring has arrived, and with it our long overdue PWEP newsletter. You may not have heard from us for a few months, but we've been hard at work behind the scenes throughout the winter, and we're gearing up for a busy and productive season!
Here are the latest updates:
1) Little Sauble River
Remember our plan to protect and restore the Little Sauble River? Well, we've set up a water quality monitoring and river restoration program, and we're ready to get started.
The Little Sauble has been described by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters as "Kincardine's most unique water feature", due to its rich spawning beds for Great Lakes steelhead, Coho and Chinook Salmon and much more (see OFAH's letter commenting on the proposed Tidman development). Sadly, the water quality of the Little Sauble is currently quite deteriorated, but we are confident that with your help, together we will be able to restore the river to its natural state.
As part of PWEP's Little Sauble River restoration project, we're excited to announce our first ever Water Seminar, to be held on July 2nd at the Bourgeois Farm in Inverhuron. There will be a lecture and hands-on workshop. Mark your calendars!
The seminar will be an opportunity for members of the community to discuss shared conservation concerns, learn about the ecology of waterways, water quality monitoring, and much more. Further details, such as exact time and schedule of activities will be forthcoming.
In the meantime, you can learn more by checking out our new Water page.
2) Bruce C
PWEP will participate in the Impact Assessment of the proposed expansion of the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station. Our goal is to assess potential environmental and health Impacts of the Bruce C Project on the Inverhuron community, and to this end we will be hiring experts in the relevant fields to conduct the appropriate studies. We have applied for and received funding from the IAAC (Impact Assessment Agency of Canada) for this purpose. The public hearing is currently estimated to take place in May/June 2027.
3) Ongoing matters
Land Use: The Bruce County Official Plan Review is entering its final stage. We are waiting for confirmation that the comments from PWEP and the community have been integrated into the new plan, and that the historic Inverhuron settlement area will be reverted to the original Hamlet designation. The new OP will function as a roadmap for development across Bruce County until 2046, so it's crucial that our message is heard. The County is expected to schedule the public meeting soon.
That's it for now! We look forward to seeing you all at the Bourgeois Farm in Inverhuron, where the Ontario Farmland Trust (OFT) will be hosting a series of events as well. You can sign up for the OFT's Bourgeois Farm Newsletter here.
You'll be hearing from us again soon, and in the meantime we're always happy to answer your questions or connect.
